What’s The Difference Between ABS And PVC Pipe?

There are a lot of reasons that professional plumbers, contractors and homeowners use plastic pipes as all of their piping projects. Plastic pipes are relatively inexpensive, they’re lightweight, and you do not have to worry about them ever corroding. Plastic pipes are also much better at keeping water hot and do not suffer condensation issues from cold water like a lot of metal pipes do. However, not all plastic piping is created the same. The two most common plastic pipes are ABS and PVC.

The Difference Between ABS And PVC Pipes

The major differences between these plastic pipes really comes down to situational preferences and minor differences. However, there is one major component that stands out between Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes, and that is that ABS pipes are made with BPA while PVC pipes are not.

One thing that you should keep in mind when it comes to picking between these two plastic pipe options is the fact that your local government may have made the decision a lot easier for you. This is because some local building codes mandate the use of one type of pipe over the other due to numerous local factors such as drainage, sewage, etc.

Strengths And Weaknesses

PVC pipes tend to be a lot more flexible than their ABS counterparts. However, ABS pipes are a lot stronger and are more resistant to shock. Because of this, ABS is best used in extremely cold environments (it can also warp and bend if exposed to heat and sunlight.) While both of these pipe options are usually close enough in price, the decision will likely come down to what kind of project you are doing and where you are doing it.
